DNS records: A, CNAME, MX, TXT

What the main DNS records do and how to add them.

Records are edited in the DNS editor in your client area. When you create a site on MCHosting, the basic records are added automatically.

TypePurposeExample
APoints the domain to the server’s IPv4 address@ → 203.0.113.10
AAAAThe same for IPv6@ → 2001:db8::10
CNAMEMakes one name an alias of anotherwww → example.uz.
MXSays which server receives the domain’s email@ → mail.example.uz. (10)
TXTText record: SPF, DKIM, DMARC, domain verification@ → "v=spf1 mx -all"

Notation

  • @ is the domain itself (example.uz).
  • A trailing dot (example.uz.) means a fully qualified name.
  • TTL is how many seconds a record is cached. Lower TTL to 300 before a move so changes spread faster.

Watch out

  • A CNAME can’t coexist with other records on the same name and isn’t used for the bare domain (@).
  • A domain must have only one SPF record — combine several services into one.
